THE MECHANIC is a 2011 action thriller film starring Jason Statham, Ben Foster and Donald Sutherland. It was directed by Simon West, who also directed Con Air and The General’s Daughter and was the executive producer of Black Hawk Down. The Mechanic is a very loose reimagining of the 1972 movie of the same name starring Charles Bronson and Jan-Michael Vincent. Jason Statham plays a hit man who works for a large trans-national corporation, Donald Sutherland plays one of the principals of the corporation and Ben Foster plays Donald Sutherland’s son.
I’m a huge fan of the original film and was at first a little confused by the “reimagining” of the new version. After watching it a second time a really enjoyed it for what it was-a very well made action adventure movie. If you’re a gun buff, you’re going to love this movie because they use nearly every high tech assault rifle and SMG known to humanity. The one self defense lesson that I took away from watching the film is that you have to integrate your unarmed combatives with your firearm skills. In extreme close quarter battle it sometimes makes more sense tactically to use striking and grappling than to just shoot the enemy outright. If you’ve never seen the original, I highly recommend that you do, as well as watching this new version.
